Individuals and families experience homelessness for a variety of different reasons. Homelessness intersects with all walks of life, including unexpected life tragedies, the rising cost of housing, mental illness and addiction. In John Smith’s case, he lacked the support network and finances to have somewhere safe to discharge after incarceration.

John entered homelessness and was connected to the KHDS Rapid Rehousing Program after a brief stay in an emergency shelter. The MyHOME Rapid Rehousing program serves individuals experiencing homelessness in Kenosha County. The program provides subsidized rental assistance based on income and case management services for up to 24 months. Case managers work alongside individuals to house them as soon as possible, help identify and remove barriers, and teach the life, employment, and tenancy skills needed to maintain permanent housing.

While in the program, John was able to learn employment skills, maintain multiple sources of income, and began to pay a portion of his rent. With the support of the program and a housing stability plan that John created and followed, he was able to learn needed skills to reach his self-defined goals. Over time, John began to pay his full rent and graduated from the MyHOME Rapid Rehousing Program successfully. John is one of many people who was able to end his homelessness with the assistance provided by the program.
