The Reed Family Story

The Reeds came to KHDS specifically requesting to work with children with medical needs ... they started their journey with excitement and the willingness to learn and help the child through the many medical challenges that would come their way.

KHDS 2023 Foster Parents Of The Year

Specialized Foster Care is unique program, and sometimes families want to foster for unique reasons. The Reeds came to KHDS specifically requesting to work with children with medical needs, as the family did have some medical training. A few months after receiving their license, one day, the child that they had been waiting for was presented to them. They started their journey with excitement. They were willing to learn and help the child through the many medical challenges that would come their way.

Accepted For Who They Are

The Reeds have had many hospital stays and long nights of caring for the child’s needs. All while doing this ensuring that the child has a sense of independence, comfort and normalcy. They continually strive to acquire knowledge and resources that will ensure the child’s life is as stable as it can be. The Reeds offer a tremendous amount of love, support and amazing care through teaching skills advocacy for the child. They encourage the child to express her needs, thoughts and feelings on a daily basis. In short, she is accepted for who she is. The Reeds also work hard to ensure her safety. They have provided a stable and healthy environment for her to thrive.

The Teaching Family Model

The Reeds have incorporated the Teaching Family Model in their interactions with the child. Through the sleepless nights and busy days they are always appreciative and carry themselves in a professional manner. They teach skills in a way that feels normalized and tailored to the child’s needs and level of development. They consistently use preventive teaching and praise in daily interactions with their foster child. The couple works hard to offer age-appropriate choices and problem-solving is modeled regularly. The Reeds also understand the importance of family and are willing to work with the biological family by communicating and involving them when appropriate.

KHDS recognized the Reeds with the 2023 Foster Parents of the Year award, followed by the Lonnie and Elaine Phillips Award from The Teaching Family Model Association.
